I am monarch of all I survey;
My right there is none to dispute;
From the centre all round to the sea
I am lord of the fowl and the brute.
O Solitude! where are the charms
That sages have seen in thy face?
Better dwell in the midst of alarms,
Than reign in this horrible place.
– William Cowper, “The Solitude of Alexander Selkirk”
In 1782, English poet William Cowper immortalized the emotions of Alexander Selkirk, the stranded Scottish sailor who was also the inspiration for Daniel Dafoe’s enduring novel Robinson Crusoe.
Despite finding himself the “monarch of all I survey,” Selkirk quickly came to regret his decision to live alone on an otherwise uninhabited island in the South Pacific. The world may have its challenges, but much better to face them head-on and make the most out of life than to slink away from society and live alone.
As a brand, Better Dweller seeks to help the modern individual flourish in the midst of the day’s alarms. Our products are designed to give men and women the tools they need to live their best lives, to thrive as “a piece of the continent,/A part of the main” (to quote now from Cowper’s ancestor, the poet John Donne).
